About EASTGALLERY
Since 2005, as Bodhi Art Gallery, we have presented exhibitions by many internationally recognised artists - to great reception from collectors and art fans. Now the venue will be re-launching as a new space called EASTGALLERY. This new development sets out to bring you a broad range of art exhibitions and events. Our first phase sees the installation of a renovated gallery space in a prime location in East London.

EASTGALLERY presents established and emerging art talent with a dynamic gallery space to present their artwork. Our previous success as an exhibition venue brought in photographers, illustrators, painters and a range of product launches and pop-up shops. The venue has proved popular for both individual and group exhibitions. Our unique offering includes an international curatorial team. EASTGALLERY also has a offices in Tokyo, Japan which allows us to continue to promote art talent worldwide.

The gallery will soon be accompanied by a basement level bar venue where we will be delivering a range of top quality drinks and cocktails created by our specialist mixologists. Below East will be opening late 2009.

EASTGALLERY is available for hire for exhibitions and events, we welcome applications from curators, agents and independent artists.

On Paper: an exclusive exhibition of selected print by Dephect. 11th December 2009, 7.00pm.

The 11th of December don’t miss the opening night of East Gallery next exhibition: On Paper by Dephect.

Founded by 2 friends from London in 1999, Dephect is a product of the lifestyle and culture that has inspired us over the last decade. Growing up as skaters and listening to Hip Hop in the early 90’s paved our way for a love of underground art and music, and a passion for drawing, painting and graphic design. While remaining under the radar of the masses, Dephect is now an international brand in its own right, progressing via graphic collaborations with unknown and established artists alike.

On paper is the celebration of Dephect 10th anniversary and is a unique opportunity to view and purchase from a selection of 25 exclusive prints,  carefully selected from their prestigious catalogue of t-shirt graphic. Each print is signed and numbered in limited editions of only 30 per graphic.

Culture Jam 13-11-2009 From 6 to 10 pm

The Baltics meet Britain on Brick Lane!

Culture Jam, an arts festival celebrating the positive impact Lithuanian and Eastern European immigrants have on Britain, is coming to Brick Lane.
English and British artists will collaborate for an evening of music, art, photography and short films, exploring the lives of Lithuanians living in London today. The aim of Culture Jam, now in its second year in London, is to highlight the common threads in Lithuanian and British lives; celebrate Lithuanian culture, history and diversity; and smash stereotypes and challenge misconceptions about the immigrant experience.

Gyte Mankute, Culture Jam’s London organiser, said: “What we want to do is change people’s thinking of Lithuanians and Eastern Europeans here in the UK. There is a perception that we come here, work on a building site or in construction for a couple years and then go back home. The opposite is true; we come from all walks of life and do much to enrich and enhance modern British life.”
She added: “At a time when the BNP is on the BBC, it is more vital than ever to build bridges between cultures. The vibrant East End, which is constantly being reinvented by immigrants, is the perfect setting to get this message out.”

Highlights of the evening include a sculpture installation by Rosemary Shawyer;  photography by Migle Backovaite, Deivydas Sutkaitis and Tomas Urbelionis; “Mission Siberia”, presentation on the genocide of Lithuanian’s in the Second World War; and short films from a number of UK and Lithuanian filmmakers.

Culture Jam, organised by the British Lithuanian Youth Association in partnership with Cargo, is in its third consecutive year in the UK, the second in the capital. A Birmingham edition of Culture Jam will run on 14th November 2009. The organisation aims to expand the programme with a Scottish event being added in 2010.

The Joy of Toy

EASTGALLERY will be hosting the first UK vinyl toy expo from 6th November.

THE JOY OF TOY exhibition is a retrospective of some of the landmark pieces by sub-culture artists and designers who work in the contemporary pop art medium of character and toy design.

The sub-culture of the vinyl toy, sometimes referred to as designer vinyl or art toys, has been steadily growing over the past decade. With companies such as Kidrobot exhibiting in Selfridges and adFunture Workshop exhibiting in the V&A, its unabated growth in popularity is both a niche consumer market and an art movement in itself.

Iconic pieces by artists such as Kaws, Michael Lau, Eric So, Bounty Hunter and James Jarvis will be displayed alongside a collection of prints, drawings and paintings.

These aren’t the sort of toys to be played with, they are collected, treasured and cared for as affordable art pieces, produced in limited quantities and the rarer the better!

Alongside the exhibition there will be a gallery pop-up shop and special artist signings of products.

This inaugural UK vinyl toy expo event will take place from 6th November until the 15th November. Launch event is the evening of 6th November from 6PM until 9PM.

The Witches Opening Party: 29-10-2009 at 6,30pm

The witches are here. They’ve all come back.

INKYMOLE • TOM HARE * ANTHONY SAINT JAMES • ED GARLAND

A visual exploration of what might happen if the infamous Pendle Witches – hung in 1612 for crimes of witchcraft – came back.

UK-based illustrator Sarah Coleman, aka Inkymole, teams up with New York photographer Anthony Saint James, willow artist Tom Hare and writer Ed Garland to present an intriguing and deliciously dark take on the witchhunts of the 1600s.

Unsettling photography, twisted shadowy figures and expressive type-led illustration combine in response to the wicked and uneasy ’confessions’ of the modern-day witches, penned by Manchester-born Garland.

A suitably atmospheric soundtrack is provided by Demdike Stare.

Opening Party:

Thursday October 29th 2009 at 6.30pm

‘Pendle Witch Brew’ sponsored by Moorhouses

Music by Demdike Stare

Food by Jed Smith

Show open until November 5th
